Remarks from Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter |

Yukio Hatoyama
Prime Minister-designate of Japan and the leader of the Democratic Party of Japan
A New Era for Japan?
The ruling Liberal Democratic Party was decisively defeated on August 31st. It had, excepting a few months, controlled the government of Japan since 1955. It presided over one of the world's most remarkable stories of economic growth that made Japan the second largest economy, a position it retains today. Japan also went into a period of economic stagnation starting around 1990. The economic reforms that began in 1997-98 had limited success.
What are the prospects of a strong Japanese economy? Will a new government change relationships between Japan and the United States? How will China and other Asian countries react? Are there lessons that America can learn about financial reforms?
Ambassador Nishimiya will share his reflections on Japan's experiences and their relevance to American business today. He also will discuss this most important political change in over a half century from the perspectives of Japan's past and future.
