４月５日の「サクラ・サンデー」に駆けつけ、翌日はフィラデルフィア市内の図書館で子供たちに絵本の読み聞かせをしてくださった、第２２代日本さくらの女王の数井（かずい）えりささん。着物が似合うしっとりとした美しさと明るいキャラクターで、２日間に渡り多くの人々を魅了しました。彼女へのインタビューをどうぞご覧ください。
The 22nd Cherry Blossom Queen, Erisa Kazui, came to Sakura Sunday on April 5. The next day she read picture-book stories in Japanese to children at Center City Philadelpahia libraries. Looking poised in her kimono, her sunny disposition and grace charmed many people during her two day stay in town. Let’s see what she had to say.
Q: サクラ・サンデーに参加されての感想をお聞かせ下さい。
What was your impression of Sakura Sunday?
A: ワシントンDCの桜祭りからフィラデルフィアに来たのですが、フェアマウントパークの桜は本当にきれいで感動しました。特に、１９２６年に日本政府から独立１５０周年を記念して、フィラデルフィア市に贈られた最初の枝垂桜を見られたのが、とても嬉しかったです。そしてお越しいただいた方の多さに驚きました。
I came to Philadelphia after visiting the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington DC, and I was struck by how beautiful the cherry blossoms in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park were. Especially the weeping cherry tree that was given to Philadelphia in 1926 by the Japanese government in honor of the 150th anniversary of American independence—when I saw those trees it made me very happy. Also, I was surprised at how many people came to Sakura Sunday!
Q: アメリカで紹介される『日本文化』とはどういうものでしたか？そして多くのアメリカ人に愛されているということに対して、どうお感じになられましたか？
How do you characterize the “Japanese Culture” that is being introduced in America at events like Sakura Sunday, and what is your reaction to seeing how well-received it is by so many Americans?
A: 私たちの世代では逆に見る機会が減ってしまった、和太鼓や日本舞踊といった伝統的な日本文化が海外で見られることが驚きでしたし、海外の方たちに愛されていることに感動しました。そして私たちの世代も、もう少しこういった伝統といったものを大切に守っていかなくてはいけないと思いました。
These days most people my age in Japan don’t have many chances to see traditional Japanese culture like taiko drumming and Japanese dance, so I was surprised that I could experience it in other countries. I was also happy at how well-received it is by the people living in those countries. And I felt that my generation of Japanese has to put a little more focus on staying in touch with our traditional culture.
Q: 「さくらの女王」の役割というのはどういったものですか？
What’s involved in being the Cherry Blossom Queen?
A: 日本の文化の象徴である「さくら」を通して、国際親善をしております。アメリカはワシントンDCとフィラデルフィアに毎年、ドイツは2年に1度訪問しています。日本国内でも、各地で催される「さくら祭り」、「さくら植樹祭」等に出席し、桜の保護と育成を推進するためにボランティア活動を行っております。
It has to do with promoting international goodwill through cherry blossoms, the symbol of Japanese culture. We go to Washington DC and Philadelphia every year, and to Germany once every two years. We also attend the cherry blossom festivals and tree planting ceremonies that take place all over Japan, and participate in volunteer programs to promote the preservation and care of cherry trees.
Q: 数井えりささんが「さくらの女王」になったきっかけを教えてください。
How did you become the Cherry Blossom Queen?
A: もともと環境問題に興味があり調べていたところ、財団法人「日本さくらの会」の存在を知りました。そしてちょうどタイミングが良く、２年に１度選出される「さくらの女王」の応募期間中でしたので、国際親善に尽くせればと思い応募しました。そして２００８年３月１５日、「日本さくらの女王選出大会」において２１３名の応募者の中から、第２２代日本さくらの女王として選ばれました。
I’m interested in environmental issues, and when I was researching ways to get involved, I came across a foundation called the Japan Cherry Blossom Association. just at that time they were having the selection for the Cherry Blossom Queen, which only happens once every two years, so the timing worked out perfectly. I figured I would give it my all in the name of international goodwill and signed up. Then on March 15, 2008 I participate din the Japan Cherry Blossom Queen Contest and was selected out of 213 other contestants to be the 22nd generation of Cherry Blossom Queen.
Q: 今後の活動のご予定は？
What’s next on your schedule?
A: 日本各地のイベントに参加いたしますが、大きいものとしては年に一度開催される「桜祭り中央大会」があります。こちらには衆議院議長、参議院議長の両方もご出席されます。地道に植樹したり、一生懸命手入れを続けてきたといった桜に貢献した方々が表彰される、名誉ある華やかな舞台です。
We go to cherry blossom events all over Japan, but coming up next is a very large annual event called the Cherry Blossom Festival Central Convention. The Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President of the House of Councilors (the two houses of the Japanese Diet) both attend. People who have planted many cherry trees and given their time and effort to sakura care and preservation are honored. It’s a very distinguished and lavish affair.

The Japan Cherry Blossom Queen is a symbol of the National Flower of Japan. The first Queen was selected in 1966 and each Queen reigns for two years. In her voluntary capacity, the Queen encourages activities that foster the planting and nurturing of cherry trees; participates in symbolic tree plantings, and represents the Japan Cherry Blossom Association (JCBA) and Japan as a good will ambassador in festivals and celebrations throughout the World,including such countries as the United States, Germany, Brazil and others.
