2008 Program

Vaccines, New Directions

Program Overview
For many years, the number of major participants in the vaccine marketplace was dwindling, largely due to economics, mergers in the pharmaceutical industry and occasional untoward events. The economic opportunities and the process of consolidation seem to be reversing in the field of vaccines. For example, Merck and GSK have developed new vaccines to prevent cervical cancer, GSK has made multiple acquisitions to extend their worldwide vaccine business into pandemic flu and influenza, Astra Zeneca and Novartis have jumped into the market through acquisition, and the number of young biotechnology companies engaged in vaccine research has grown exponentially throughout the world. The Ninth Annual Philadelphia-Japan Health Sciences Dialogue seeks to examine the factors behind this trend, and to explore new policies, economics and technologies driving renewed interest in vaccines.
