Cherry Blossom Festival
Tree Maintenance Volunteers Take Care of Business For the Last Time This Year
Konnichiwa, Philadelphia! It's us -- the JASGP -- who, with the assistance of many do-good volunteers, see to it that your landscape is beautified spring after spring when the cherry blossom trees come into bloom. And as much as we love our monthly tree maintenance outings, the 20th of October marked our last such event of the year. JASGP volunteers swiftly took care of business, leaving time for a lovely picnic in Fairmount Park complete with Japanese boxed lunches and frisbee -- this week's blog recounts the experience, photos included.

The JASGP and its group of dedicated volunteers spent a gorgeous morning in Fairmount Park, mulching and pruning 80 Cherry Blossom trees in need of attention. Working along Wynnefield Ave & N. George’s Hill Drive, it took less than two hours to finish up -- with the aid of many seasoned regulars, the crew got the job done in no time and headed off for lunch and frisbee 45 minutes ahead of schedule.

Even without the occasional praise of pedestrian passersby, tree maintenance is always a fulfilling and refreshing task I look forward to -- though I couldn't complain about getting to that complimentary Japanese boxed lunch a bit early, I actually found myself wishing there was more work to be done. Granted, I was taking photos so I missed out a bit... and... I also arrived a bit late. Lost? What? No way, I've... never been lost... Embarassed

Anyway, here are some photos of the action:

Volunteers get to work moving mulch. Usually working in shifts, some shovel while others wheelbarrow the mulch to the trees.
The mulch is dumped around the base of the tree and pushed into the shape of a volcano. The mulch nourishes the trees by helping to conserve moisture, reducing water runoff and soil erosion, and maintaining a steady soil temperature, keeping the tree warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.
Though the gentler task, pruning is equally important to the health of the tree -- encouraging a strong structure can prevent damage, disease, pest infestation as the tree grows.
Jubilations! We finished early.
The crew took a stroll down the street to the picnic area to have lunch. It was a beautiful autumn day -- perfect for a picnic.
Some frisbee action while waiting for food to arrive.
The arrival of lunch sent cries of excitement reverberating throughout Fairmount Park. (Not really, but it might as well have -- the Japanese boxed lunches from Asahi food court are delicious enough to raise suspicions concerning our crew's spirit of volunteerism...)

Looks like a great time, huh? If you didn't get the chance to participate this year, check back in spring for information about our next tree maintenance event. Thanks to all our volunteers -- we hope to see you all again next year!
