In collaboration with FOTOSPHERE in NY and Benrido in Kyoto, Japan, Project
Basho is pleased to announce “Time: Exhibition of Contemporary Collotype
Prints. The show will run from March 13th through April 24th. An opening
reception will be held on March 13th from 6–9 pm.

For this exhibition, Benrido Atelier, one of the world’s few remaining collotype
studios in Kyoto, Japan, has collaborated with Emmet Gowin, Eikoh Hosoe,
Graciela Iturbide, Koichiro Kurita, John Pfahl, Ryuji Taira, George Tice, and Arthur
Tress to create 16 collotype prints.

Invented in France in the mid-1800s, the collotype is a photomechanical process
capable of producing the tonal subtleties of a photograph and the textural quality of a print. However, the gelatin-based process is labor-intensive, involving hours of
labor and precise control over heat and humidity. While other ateliers adopted
more commercially viable printing technologies and abandoned collotype all
together, Benrido Atelier, has worked at refining the art form for over a century.

In conjunction with this traveling exhibition in the US, and commemorating 100
years of collotype expertise, Benrido is issuing a limited-edition handcrafted
portfolio of 16 prints from eight prominent fine art photographers. Each work is
presented as an individual folding screen diptych on handmade paper, and the
portfolio is housed in a paulownia wood box both hand-crafted in Kyoto. An
accompanying essay by James Enyeart, former Director of the George Eastman
House, is letterpress-printed by Leonard Seastone.
