This talk explores the reasons for the enduring popularity in the Japanese Buddhist pantheon of Buddhist saints known as Rakan (Luohan in Chinese; and Arhat in Sanskrit), devout, unconventional personages who gained enlightenment after hearing the teachings of the Buddha in India .
