With an eclectic mix of international music on the first Friday of each month, and recognized and emerging jazz artists performing all other Fridays, it’s a stylish way to start your weekend.

Contemporary Japanese Koto and Jazz Fusion Concert On March 2nd,
2007 in the Philadelphia Museum of Art there will be a concert featuring several renowned New York based musicians.

Masayo Ishigure, koto and shamisen, was born in Japan and has lived in NYC since 1992. She has performed throughout the United States and Europe, and has recorded music for the Nagano Olympics, the soundtrack for Memoirs of a Geisha, and several other television productions and projects. She will present a solo piece from Grace, her debut CD which was released in 2001. The rest of the program will feature compositions by John "Kaizan" Neptune, an American born Shakuhachi player and composer who has lived in Japan for several years.

Koji Kakinuma's executions of massively large pieces along with his frequent collaborations with musical groups in performance art demonstrations have caught the eye of traditional and modern artists alike and his popularity in Japan has reached cult status. Since 2000, he has been featured in two separate televised documentaries, Top Runner and The Passionate Land and he was invited to execute a performance piece at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibit The Written Image. In 2006, he was invited by Princeton University to become a visiting researcher in the Department or Visual and Performing Arts and presently resides in Princeton, New Jersey. Most recently, he was commissioned to execute the title artwork(The Warrior Ideal) for the 2007 season of Japan’s most popular serialized television drama series Taiga Drama which details the life of the medieval Japanese warlord, Takeda Shingen.

Art After 5 programs are subject to change. The performances are scheduled for 5:45 pm – 6:45 pm and 7:15 pm – 8:15 pm Guided gallery tours are offered throughout the evening. There is no additional charge for performances or guided tours after Museum admission.
